“He told them: ‘The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.’” (Luke 10:2 HCSB)
This is a time to reflect on the goodness of God and His provision—His harvest. We are blessed in America and should never take that for granted.
Jesus talked about an even greater harvest, the harvest of souls for His kingdom. The harvest is abundant, waiting for workers. There is no question that every one of us is among those workers, for Jesus commands all His disciples to “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28:19)
Still, not all of us can go, at least not to other countries. Although we may not be able to go physically, we can go spiritually. We can be part of the harvest through prayer, planting churches, making disciples, and calling out to the Lord of the harvest to send workers to go and share the gospel.
One way is to ask God to give us a country to pray for regularly. How would we pray? What would every country need, regardless of location or culture? Here are some suggestions:
1. Pray for people to be willing to go and share the gospel.
2. Intercede for the hearts of those far from God to be prepared to open to the truth so they can receive it as the Word of God, not the word of man.
3. Ask God to provide new believers with a Bible in their own language and someone to disciple them.
4. Pray the new believers will also learn to share the gospel.
Sometimes the field ripe for harvest is our own circle of family and friends. The Lord of the harvest will send someone into the life of a loved one who will plant a seed, a grain of truth in his heart, and who will defend the truth to prevent Satan from snatching it away. The Lord will make sure the seed is nurtured, fed, watered, and able to grow until it is ripe. He will send someone at the right moment to gather that soul into the kingdom—in answer to our prayers. What a reason to pray and be thankful!
